What began as a small, garage-based operation has grown into a respected local business built on integrity, craftsmanship, and customer care. Our mission remains simple—deliver dependable service, honest advice, and lasting comfort for every home and business we serve.
About Tom Vaughn, Owner
With over four decades of HVAC experience, Tom Vaughn leads our team with deep technical knowledge and genuine dedication. A licensed HVAC contractor with an Associate’s Degree in HVAC Technology, Tom is also certified by the Building Performance Institute as a Building Analyst and Envelope Specialist. Since launching the company in 1992, he’s built a reputation for reliability, professionalism, and community support—donating time and resources to local youth programs, veterans’ events, and families in need. You’ll still find Tom in the field every day, working alongside the crew to ensure every job meets our high standards.

Meet Our Team
Tom and Elizabeth Vaughn
Tom and Elizabeth Vaughn founded Mattawan Mechanical Services in 1992, building the company on hard work, integrity, and a deep commitment to their community. Lifetime residents of Mattawan, Michigan, they are proud supporters of both their hometown and the surrounding communities.
Outside of work, Tom and Elizabeth enjoy vacationing anywhere warm, spending time with their children and granddaughter, and staying active in the community. Tom is known for always being hands-on and working alongside the team, while Elizabeth can often be found supporting local events and initiatives.
One of their greatest joys is watching the MMS team grow—celebrating not only the accomplishments made within the company, but also the successes each team member achieves in their lives beyond work.
Together, Tom and Elizabeth continue to lead MMS with the same passion and dedication that began their journey over 30 years ago.
James and Ryan Caldwell
James and Ryan Caldwell may have joined Team MMS only three years ago, but they quickly became part of the family that has always defined Mattawan Mechanical Services. James brings years of HVAC experience to the team, and together he and Tom have successfully tackled dozens of projects with skill, dedication, and teamwork.
Both James and Ryan value their family time, and they take great pride in having Jacob (their son) work alongside them at Mattawan Mechanical Services. Their commitment, work ethic, and genuine care for the team have made them an integral part of the MMS community.
Dave Aurand
David Aurand has been a valued member of Team MMS for eight years. His expertise shines in the Metal Shop, where he carefully crafts custom ductwork for dozens of new construction homes across Southwest Michigan. A proud Decatur local, Dave takes great pride in his craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Over the years, he has enjoyed watching the steady growth of Mattawan Mechanical Services and being a part of the team’s continued success. David’s skill, reliability, and dedication make him an essential part of the MMS family.
Austin Neifert
Austin Neifert has been a dedicated member of Mattawan Mechanical Services for over five years. During that time, his knowledge has grown tremendously, making him one of the team’s most reliable troubleshooters. Austin thrives on challenging situations—whether it’s a complex commercial project or a geothermal system, he doesn’t stop until he finds a solution.
Outside of work, Austin enjoys spending time on his new acreage and with his dog, Oakley—who happens to be a Team MMS favorite. His determination, problem-solving skills, and positive attitude make him an invaluable part of the MMS family.
Dakota Nowakowski
Dakota brings a calm, steady presence that our customers truly appreciate. His patience and thoughtful approach make him exceptional at troubleshooting and guiding homeowners through important decisions about their HVAC systems—never overbearing, always supportive.
He’s also passionate about mentoring and training our maintenance technicians as they begin their journey in the HVAC field, helping them build confidence and skill from day one.
Outside of work, Dakota and his wife Katrina enjoy life with their 4-legged baby, Nova—another beloved member of the extended Team MMS family!
